CE Course Description

This brief intermediate level continuing education course examines the risk of suicide among people who are receiving treatment for substance abuse. The course was developed using a Quick Guide summary of SAMSHA’s Tip 50, Addressing Suicidal Thoughts in Substance Abuse Treatment. It is intended to provide information about suicidality, discuss how it impacts those with substance abuse issues, and to determine ways to best help those individuals.

CE Course Objectives

1. Outline consensus panel recommendations for helping substance abuse counselors increase their understanding of clients with suicidal thoughts and behaviors.
2. Differentiate between suicide, nonsuicidal self-injury, and suicidal ideation, plan, intention, preparation, and attempt.
3. Identify counselor strategies to address suicidal ideation and behavior.
4. Summarize the components of the GATE four-step process for identifying and responding to suicidality.
